National Coalition of Girls’ Schools (NCGS)
The National Coalition of Girls’ Schools (NCGS) is a leading advocate for girls’ education. Believing that girls’ schools are the most powerful, transformative learning environments for girls, NCGS seeks to document the unique qualities that best define the girls’ school experience. To this end, NCGS conducts research, promotes best practices, supports public outreach activities, and sponsors academic conferences with a focus on girls and learning. It serves its member schools as they prepare young women to be the visionaries and leaders who will make the world a better one for all.
The Parents League of New York is a not-for-profit membership organization of independent schools and families. The Parents League is affiliated with 300 independent schools, including New York City preschools, K-12 day schools, and boarding schools. The League’s school advisory service offers an unbiased review of all their affiliated independent schools as parents make the journey through the admissions process. Uptown, downtown, and all around town, The Parents League provides dependable information on parenting toddlers through teens, serving as a resource center for all New York City Parents.
Parents in Action (PIA)
NYC-Parents in Action is a non-profit, volunteer organization founded in 1980 to serve parents of New York City independent schools—a group of over 26,000 families. They are committed to the belief that communication between parent and child is the most effective tool in producing a healthy environment in which children can develop into mature and responsible young adults. They believe that working together bolsters parents’ confidence in our ability to make a difference.
Joint Schools Activities (JSA)
Joint Schools Activities, Inc. (JSA), is a non-profit organization created and supported by the Parents Associations of Independent Schools in Manhattan and Riverdale. Their mission is to advocate interest-based and age-appropriate activities for teenagers and to provide a broad range of opportunities for socialization through common experiences. The Joint Schools Committee includes student and parent representatives from many of these schools who meet once a month to discuss possible activities. These activities are often related to community service.
Schools Unite Network (SUN)
Marymount is a member of “SUN,” the Schools Unite Network’s safety initiative. SUN’s innovative technology-based communications network was activated in cooperation with the NYPD to prevent and address crime involving NYC children. Well-established as a credible source for providing information from and to the police, SUN effectively uses technology to create a strong community among parents, schools, community institutions, the NYPD, the NYC Parks Department and other agencies for the safety of children. The Rockefeller University’s Parents & Science Initiative
The Parents & Science Initiative at the Rockefeller University aims to keep parents informed of scientific and medical discoveries that affect their children and to promote scientific literacy among parents so that they can help to educate their children.
Author and parent educator, Nancy Samalin, has been offering parenting workshops in New York City for over twenty-five years. Her book, Loving Without Spoiling, provides advice to parents on how to encourage children to take responsibility for themselves in managing relationships with siblings and friends. Jean Schreiber is an early-childhood educational consultant who has developed and directed early-childhood programs and parenting centers. She earned her M.S. in Early Childhood Education from Bank Street College of Education, where she is now an instructor in the Continuing Professional Studies Program. Jean presents her workshops across the country on topics such as fostering the social and emotional development of young children, creating developmentally appropriate classroom experiences, and supporting the emotional and professional growth of parents and educators.
