One of the surprise events on Marymount’s Founder’s Day, February 2—the day when the School celebrates its foundress, Mother Joseph Butler, and its opening in 1926—was the awarding of the title of Marymount’s first “Honorary Alumna.” Mrs. Susana Acosta, who is currently the School’s archivist and has worked for Marymount for forty-eight years in a variety of roles, earned the title through her longstanding devotion to Marymount and for her exemplification of the traits of a Marymount alumna: perseverance, creativity, integrity, and a profound commitment to helping others. Mrs. Acosta has been integral to the Marymount community for nearly half a century, and her receipt of the title of “Honorary Alumna” was met with universal applause.
Mrs. Acosta received the award at a champagne reception for Founder’s Day. Taken completely by surprise, both by the award itself and by the presence of her children and grandchildren, Mrs. Acosta proudly posed with the certificate of her new role. As one of the people most intimately familiar with Marymount’s long and distinguished history, there could be no more deserving woman than Mrs. Acosta to be the first Honorary Alumna of the School.
