A unit on medieval art and architecture was the inspiration for an AP Art History class field trip to the Cloisters Museum. The visit gave Ms. Carcaterra’s class the opportunity to explore 600 year-old chapels without ever leaving Manhattan. The museum incorporates elements from five medieval cloisters and other monastic sites in southern France to create an ensemble of spaces, rooms, and gardens that suggest a variety of artistic aspects of medieval Europe. Many of the structures were brought from Europe by boat and reconstructed in their present location brick by brick. For the students, the past came alive as students shared a wonderful afternoon overlooking the Hudson River .
