The Lower School (Classes Nursery – III) provides child-centered, creative learning within a structured and challenging environment. Children develop academically as they are taught to value learning, discover and explore the world through observation, role-playing, and hands-on activities, and see themselves as active participants in the education process. Self-esteem and confidence are natural results of a rich, diverse, and highly personal education.Teachers emphasize critical thinking skills and diverse approaches to problem solving.
Subject areas are often integrated as students learn about their world and the larger world. The curriculum is based on an interdisciplinary approach, and the annual school-wide goal is incorporated into learning experiences throughout the Lower School. The goal is further reinforced during the year in assemblies and chapel services. Spanning all grade levels and disciplines, technology is used where appropriate to support and enhance educational endeavors at Marymount. Students develop understanding, self-confidence, and the skills needed to use technological tools effectively and efficiently. In the Lower School, student practice public speaking and dramatic arts in weekly speech classes, assemblies, and special events. In this division, girls start preparing to take individual responsibility for their personal economic well-being, through an interdisciplinary financial literacy curriculum. They begin to learn how the world of finance works and how to use one’s resources to make the world a better place.
The School’s unique location opposite the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Central Park enhances the Lower School curriculum. Frequent field trips enrich classroom activities and offer students an opportunity to learn more about New York City.
Students interact with members of the Middle and Upper Schools, who serve as role models and mentors. Each Lower School student has a “Big Sister” in the Middle or Upper School, and the bond between them is strengthened throughout the year by gatherings, holiday programs, events, and projects. In the classroom, students are taught to balance personal freedom with respect for the feelings and rights of others and to see themselves as part of a larger community.
