Summer 2011
Dear Class XII Parents:
As your daughter prepares to take on the multiple responsibilities of senior year at Marymount, I look forward to continuing to guide her through the college admissions process. The College Counseling Timeline lists important dates related to college applications, SAT and ACT exams. Please note that the Registration Deadline for the October 1 SAT & SAT Subject Tests is September 9. If your daughter is planning to take the October SAT, she should register as soon as possible with the College Board. The Late Registration Deadline for the September 10 ACT is August 26, and students who plan to take this test should register now with ACT. The Class XII Parents’ College Evening and Reception is scheduled for Tuesday, September 20 at 6:00 p.m., and the College Financial Aid Seminar will be held on Monday, October 17 at 6:30 p.m. The two official college visiting days for seniors are Monday, September 26 and Tuesday, October 11.
Writing college essays and filling out applications will require a great deal of your daughter’s time, energy and patience during the first semester. Added to these responsibilities are her heavy course load, sports and extracurricular activites. Plus, everyone needs some moments to unwind! During the College Evening we’ll talk about how the school and family can best work together to support your daughter. We will also discuss application forms, deadlines, essays, Early Decision and Early Action plans, the process for sending SAT and/or ACT scores to colleges, Marymount’s procedures and deadlines, college visitors, college receptions in NYC and other important matters.
Please note that more than eighty admissions representatives will visit Marymount in the fall, and seniors may be excused from class to meet with them. A schedule of college visitors will be posted on the college counseling bulletin board and sent to each senior by e-mail. It will also be available on the Marymount website; click on Academics and scroll down to College Counseling. Class XII students also receive frequent email messages from the college counseling office informing them of college receptions being held in the NYC area. I hope you and your daughter will take advantage of the opportunity to learn more about various colleges and universities by attending these receptions.
Finally, as a “parent-only” event, the College Evening on September 20 is a good time for you to speak openly about your concerns and ask questions about any aspect of the college admissions process. I hope you have had or will have the opportunity to visit colleges this summer. Your thoughts and impressions are invaluable as you and I work together to make the college admissions process successful for your daughter. Please feel free to call or email me at any time.
Sincerely,
Pauline Brookfield
Director of College Counseling
