January 2012
Dear Class XI Parents:
The first official College Night for Class XI students and parents will be held on Thursday, January 12 at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium. This is a very important program, and it is crucial that you attend.
The spring semester is the time you and your daughter begin to take steps toward the college selection process. College planning is truly an exciting adventure that requires organization, scheduling, and knowledge, and the January12th College Night marks the beginning of the college search process.
At the College Night I will review important information regarding the SAT, SAT subject tests, and the ACT, and I will also talk briefly about college application procedures. Our featured speaker is Howard Singer, Associate Director of Admissions at Boston College. Mr. Singer has an excellent reputation among college admissions officers, college counselors, students and parents, and I am delighted that he has agreed to join us for this important program.
I also want to remind you that during the second semester, I will meet with you and your daughter in individual college planning sessions. At that time we will discuss possible college choices, make up an initial college list and review procedures for colleges visits and interviews. You will hear more about these details at College Night.
I look forward to seeing you on January 12 and to working closely with you this spring.
Sincerely,
Pauline Brookfield
Director of College Counseling
Summer 2011
Dear Class XI Parents:
As your daughter prepares to take on the responsibilities of junior year at Marymount, I look forward to assisting her with the college admissions process. Attached to this letter is the College Counseling Timeline that lists important dates related to the college search and the 2011-2012 SAT and ACT. Should you feel uncertain about the SAT vs. the ACT, please know that I will be speaking with students about this in the fall. I also urge you to attend the College Admissions Testing Information Session that I am offering on October 17 at 5:30 p.m. The first official Class XI College Night is scheduled for January 12, 2012.
In the fall many college representatives visit Marymount, and during their free periods, juniors are invited to meet with these visitors. Information regarding college visitors will be posted on the college counseling bulletin board and sent to each junior by email. It also will be available on the Marymount website; click on Academics and scroll down to College Counseling. Class XI students also receive frequent email messages from the college counseling office informing them of large college receptions being held in the NYC area. Students and parents may receive invitations by mail as well. I hope you and your daughter will take advantage of the opportunity to learn more about various colleges and universities by attending these receptions.
The Class XI Timeline will help you and your daughter plan out the year. You will note that numerous ACT and SAT dates are listed; juniors normally wait until January 2012 to commence test taking. During the second semester your daughter will meet with me in weekly Guidance classes during which we discuss all necessary information regarding college planning. At the risk of putting too much pressure on students, I would be remiss if I did not explain that the junior year is particularly important to the college admissions officers when they review the high school transcript. Therefore, please encourage your daughter to get off to a good start and to do her very best in her courses this year.
The college counseling office door is always open to your daughter, and scheduling of individual appointments with you and your daughter will begin in the second semester. Should you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to call or email me.
Sincerely,
Pauline Brookfield
Director of College Counseling
