In 2006, the RSHM gained non-governmental organization (NGO) status at the United Nations, expanding its global ministries to help others.

Sister Rita Arthur serves as the RSHM Representative to the UN, where she serves on numerous committees with a focus on sustainable development and the eradication of poverty. With Sister Rita, Marymount students have participated twice in the UN’s annual International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. Within the UN’s Department of Public Information, Sister Rita collaborates with congregations and other non-governmental organizations from around the globe, working tirelessly to advance the UN’s eight Millennium Development Goals. Her work includes outreach to educate the public on these goals and to support the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

As Sister Rita emphasizes, it is important for us all to remember that “we are citizens of the world,” who individually and collectively have a role to play in transcending personal and global boundaries as we work for justice and the protection of human rights.
